Diversity Week February 2016

During Diversity week the children learned that we should value and respect the fact that we are all different and celebrate these differences.

Over the week we had lots of different visitors and took part in lots of activities to learn about the diversity of our school community. On Monday we read the story of Elmer the elephant who learned that it is okay to be different. Later on Monday Kenny’s mum  came to talk to us about Malaysia as well as Chinese New Year. We learned a lot about Chinese culture, tasted Chinese food, did some Chinese writing and made Chinese lanterns.

On Tuesday morning we learned about America when Mrs Brown came to visit. We learned how to play some American sports including baseball and cheerleading. On Tuesday afternoon Harry’s mum visited school and told us about her life in Thailand. We also learned about Buddhism and made lotus flowers.

On Wednesday Eva and Bea's mum told us about her time in Nicaragua when she worked for a charity. We learned about the importance of making sure that all the people in the world have access to fresh, clean, safe water. Later on Wednesday we were introduced to our new partner school, the Gilead Academy in Ghana. We wrote letters to the pupils at the Gilead Academy.

On Thursday Olly’s mum came to talk to us about Poland. She taught us some Polish words and we did some polish baking.  

On Thursday afternoon we learned about disability. We found out what it was like to do simple tasks with only one working hand. We learned about what it would be like to be blind or partially sighted and how to read braille. We also learned how to do Makaton signing.

The week concluded with a visit from Lucia's mum who was born and grew up in Spain. We were amazed by the diversity within our own small school community and learned to appreciate our similarities and differences.
